Reply to “A Brain Drain due to Increased Regulation of Influenza Virus Research Is Highly Speculative”

چکیده
We appreciate the perspective provided by Dr. Culp in describing the acceptance by scientists of the highly regulated environment for classified physics research (1). We agree that as more microbiology research falls into the category of “dual-use research of concern” or DURC, it is important to consider the experience in fields such as physics, whose members had to learn how to deal and work with these challenges. Dr. Culp’s perspective is welcomed and important for the ongoing debate. However, we argue that in the present, the influenza research community is largely university and research institute based and therefore that the comparison to the restrictive environment accepted by the physics community is not a relevant comparison. Much of the influenza research work is currently being done by graduate students and postdoctoral fellows who need to complete their projects to receive their doctoral degrees and obtain jobs. For these individuals, interruptions of research work by moratoriums and increased regulation cannot be a welcomed state of affairs. Although we do not have any data at this time to support our belief that increased regulations in influenza research will drive some young scientists to look for less-restrictive pastures, it is reasonable to suspect that changes that affect their work environment will have some effect on career choices. Established investigators may remain in the field despite increased regulation simply because established scientists have generally very little mobility between fields (2). However, the situation for young bright minds with choice between selecting a highly regulated field and an unencumbered academic field is very different. Hence, we believe that the concerns expressed in our editorial remain valid (3).

The H1N1 virus is one of the highly contagious strains that leads to epidemic influenza every year in winter. In this outbreak sometimes rare complications of this infection occur. This report presents a rare case of encephalitis caused by H1N1 virus in a 52-year old man. After a day fever and flu like symptoms the patient was admitted in hospital due to decreased level of consciousness. ...

Objective: Influenza A virus infections are still a major health problem and the choices available for the control and treatment of the disease are limited. This research evaluated in vitro and in vivo antiviral effects of Peganum harmala L. seeds (PHS) extract against influenza A virus. Materials and Methods: In this research, in vitro anti-influenza A virus activity of the extract was assesse...

Avian influenza viruses (AIV) affect a wide range of birds and mammals, cause severe economic damage to the poultry industry, and pose a serious threat to humans. Highly pathogenic avian influenza viruses (HPAI) H5N1 were first identified in Southeast Asia in 1996 and spread to four continents over the following years. The viruses have caused high mortality in chickens and various bird species ...
متن کاملOver Expression of Influenza Virus M2 Protein in Prokaryotic System
Background and Aims: Influenza A virus of Orthomyxoviridae family is able to create pandemic influenza. Vaccination is the most effective way to prevent influenza virus infection. Matrix protein 2 (M2) is a homotetramer ion channel with 97 amino acids length and highly conserved among influenza viruses and is considered for development of a universal influenza vaccine. Materials and Methods: We...

Avian influenza (AI) is a highly contagious disease in poultry and outbreaks can have dramatic economic and health implications. For effective disease surveillance, rapid and sensitive assays are needed to detect antibodies against AI virus (AIV) proteins. In order to support eradication efforts of avian influenza (AI) infections in poultry, the implementation of “DIVA” vaccination strategies, ...
